1 John 3:1-10
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
The overall message of this passage of scripture is that we can become like our Savior and that we must love our fellowman.
Usually the phrase “the Son of God” is referring to Jesus Christ. But in verse one it says “what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God”. In question form presumably John is asking what kind of love must the Father have for us to call us sons (daughters) of God. This also says something of our relationship to Jesus Christ being our most holy elder Brother.
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be”. Further in verse two it goes on to say but we know that, when he (Christ) shall appear (Second Coming), we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Can we become like Christ, the Redeemer of all the world? According to verse two the answer is yes. So then what must we do to make that a reality? From the following verses 3-10 give us direction as to how make that a reality.
If anyone us want this to happen we must:
Purify ourselves like Christ is pure.
Christ was manifested to us to take away our sins, we need to be in a repentant mode continually.
If we abide in Christ by loving Him, Serving Him and Keeping His commandments we can better avoid sin.
We strive to not be deceived, if we are, repent.
Then it goes on to say that if we are born again (this means repentance, humility and righteous desires) then we won’t sin. Yet this passage talks about the potential for us to sin. Being born again should be a ongoing process. When we falter we repent. When we repent we are born again. The process gets easier as we get stronger in overcoming temptations from satan.
We also need to love our brothers and sisters even our fellowman. This is not an exhaustive list but we’re only reviewing this one passage. We need to become deeply aware of Christ’s teaching throughout the scriptures. But the good news is that we can become like Christ when He comes the second time.
