1 John 2:1-6:
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Commentary:
The Apsotle John preached this basic yet profound message to help save us from the affect of sin. He tells us to sin not. Instead of using the the word “but” he uses the word “and” in his transition to the next sentance that teaches us that we have a advocate with the Father. The word “but” would mean that some us of may not sin at all where “and” implies that even though he told us to sin not, we will sin.
Mortality is hard and no one of us will escape the affect of sin except through the propitation of Jesus Christ, our Savior. What does “propitation” mean? The greek version of the word highlights these aspects of the word: intercessor, helper, comforter”.
The laws of eternity demand justice for any sin commited. Christ intercedes on our behalf with God the Father as God is obligated to execute justice perfectly. But there is also an eternal law of mercy. Through Christ suffering and paying the penalty of our sins through His suffering in Gethesemne and on the Cross He is the only one that can intercede on our behalf.
He offers His suffering as payment for our sins. Since Christ’s suffering was eternal, there is a never ending supply of propitation He has for our behalf. He can intercede on behalf of the whole world because of the eternal nature of His sacred Atonement.
Verse three says “hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments”. How can we keep His commandments if we don’t know Him and His teachings? I’ve said it before, several times in this blog that we need to study the scriptures for ourselves and not rely on Sunday School lessons and sermons.
We need to read the scriptures and keep in mind what the Gospel of John teaches us that the Holy Ghost bring all things to our remembrance. That doesn’t mean we can skip out of Sunday whorship but in those few short hours we can’t learn enough to say that we really know the Saviour. Personal scripture study is essential.
If we study the scriptures daily that will help us to avoid sin more than we might without that daily reminder found in the scriptures.
Verse four in this passage states that “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” To know Christ is to love Him. To love Him naturally brings a desire to serve Him and keep His commandments.
But even still, being human we make mistakes and we fall to temptation. With heart felt godly sorrow for our sins we can obtain forgiveness through the grace of God and it is as if we had never sinned. Like Isaiah taught though we were red as crimson we will be white as snow (loose paraphrase).
If it was possible to live life without sin Christ wouldn’t have needed to suffer for our sins. But since absolutely no one is perfect including you and me, thanks be to our Father in Heaven and our Savior Jesus Christ we have an atonement and an intercessor in our Redeemer.
Verse five states “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected” That applies to none of us perfectly because we are not perfect. However that statement coupled with repentance does apply to us and Gods love can with time be perfected in us. When we are motivated in our daily lives with a Godly love and desire to be obedient to the commandments is grace truly fulfilled in our lives.
Our goal in life should reflect what it says in verse six: “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”
